Sydney Australia - Photographer Spencer Tunick said Tuesday he expected more than 2,000 people to take their clothes off and pose nude for him in and around the Sydney Opera House next month. The New York-based artist is famous for photographs of naked people arranged against iconic backgrounds.
Tunick, in Australia as part of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras festival, said his commissioned work would be a tribute to sexual equality. "I want to shout out and spread the word of equality for the gay community," he said.
He admitted that persuading enough people to disrobe was sometimes a challenge - even in balmy Sydney. "It's really difficult to get people to be brave, and let go of a lot of historical baggage," he said. Those stripping off were rarely bothered by those who came to watch them do so. "I think people would be too embarrassed to show up just to look at naked people," he said. "When you have 3,000 people nude and 50 or 100 who aren't, the attention goes towards them and they feel self-conscious. It's kind of like reverse streaking."
